I'd like to hire a professional to remove the fake fireplace. Although it might look nice in the living room, it doesn't do anything useful and more importantly, it juts into my bedroom, taking up valuable space. Am I allowed to remove it? Do I need to get council's permission to do so?

I've been informed that it can be removed. Does anyone have general contractor recommendations?

Someone is coming to remove it for me on Monday. I'll report back when it's all done.

The job is done and I'm pleased with the result. I would definitely recommend the handyman: http://www.hometask.com/profile.aspx?uid=2835

I did see the truck at the front of the building. Didn't know that this was the person who was removing the fireplace. So did you convert the fireplace area into shelving or just make the area jutting flush with the other side of the wall for more space? Did you have to go through the strata for this?

Can you post a picture of your new setup?

Here's a post about the fireplace removal with pictures:

I probably should have officially gone through the strata council (since it affects the structure of the building!), but I had only unofficially asked one particular strata member.

If anyone wants to see the bare wall in person, leave me a phone message: 604-484-0894
